Computed Tomography
A computed tomography (CT ) or
computerized axial tomography (CAT) machine is shaped like a large donut. As the
patient lies in the center of the CT unit, an x-ray tube circles the patient
taking multiple x-rays. A computer combines the x-ray images into
cross-sectional pictures, or "slices" of the body. The absorption
characteristics of the radiated tissues, effects the intensity of the x-ray beam
which produces images showing internal structures such as blood clots, skull
fractures, tumors and infections.
GE Sytec SRi
Helical Computed Tomography Unit
The x-ray tube in the GE Sytec SRi Helical CT, rotates continuously as the
patient glides through the scanning field which considerably reduces exam times.
Since the exam times are shorter, an intravenous contrast can be given to a
patient before the scan to enhance tissue differentiation.
