Surrogate Imaging Endpoints
Technical advances in MRI and greater proliferation of other imaging
technologies have allowed better evaluation of pharmaceuticals in the early
stages of development and have provided a means to objectively demonstrate
targeting of drugs and quantitatively measure dosing.
With
these advances and the FDA's acceptance and recognition of the value of
"surrogate" imaging endpoints, modern imaging techniques have increasingly
become an important part of the drug development process.
To
more quickly determine efficacy of their products, and thus accelerate the FDA
approval process, sponsors of pharmaceutical and medical device research seek
these endpoints in an accurate and reproducible manner.
