PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

INTRODUCTION

The Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBS) Graduate Program emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach to biomedical research ranging from basic to applied and clinical studies. Our students come from diverse backgrounds in the U.S. and other countries with veterinary, medical or basic science degrees. The five concentration areas of Cell Biology, Infectious Disease, Pathology, Pharmacology, and Population Medicine allow you to identify a primary interest area with the flexibility for an interdisciplinary training program. Participating CBS faculty are from NC State University as well as other universities and research institutions in the geographic area of the Research Triangle Park. Participating colleges include Veterinary Medicine and Agriculture & Life Sciences and participating departments include Molecular Biomedical Sciences, Clinical Sciences, Population Health and Pathobiology, Food Science, and Environmental and Molecular Toxicology.

Doctor of Philosophy

	DEGREE AND COURSE REQUIREMENTS
	Doctoral degrees at North Carolina State University require a minimum of 72 graduate credit hours (inclusive of research and course work) beyond the Bachelor's degree. If a Master's degree has been earned at another university, a maximum of 18 hours of relevant graduate credit may be applied toward this minimum, upon the recommendation of the student's Graduate Advisory Committee. All incoming students are also encouraged to do 2-3 laboratory rotations during their first semester before choosing their major advisor and research program. First year students will select their courses in consultation with the program director and relevant concentration area leader. Students will select the remaining courses in their program based on their concentration area and research focus in consultation with their advisor and graduate advisory committee. Required Courses for the first year students include: 1. CBS 565 Fundamentals in Biomedical Sciences 2. CBS 662 Professional Conduct in Biomedical Research 3. CBS 800/810 Program Seminar (Fall Semester); Concentration area specific seminar/journal club (Spring semester) 4. CBS 893 Doctoral Supervised Research (CBS693 for Master's) 5. One of the following courses in statistics or epidemiology* ST 511 Experimental Statistics for Biological Sciences I CBS 795G Fundamentals of Epidemiology CBS 760 Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases of Veterinary and Public Health Importance EPI 160 Fundamentals of Epidemiology (offered at UNC) First year students will select their additional courses in consultation with the program director and relevant concentration area leader. Senior students will select the remaining courses in their program based on the requirements for their concentration area and research focus in consultation with their advisor and graduate advisory committee. Master of Science

	DEGREE AND COURSE REQUIREMENTS
	The core courses and research requirements are as listed above for the Doctor of Philosophy degree except that a total of 36 graduate credit hours are required. Please refer to the NC State Graduate School Handbook for further details.

RESEARCH

Students are encouraged to use the diversity of resources available to structure an individualized course of instruction. The research plan will be developed in cooperation with the student's major advisor and thesis advisory committee to emphasize one of the concentration areas within CBS (i.e. cell biology, pharmacology, infectious diseases, pathology, or population medicine).

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

All students wishing to enter the graduate program in Comparative Biomedical Sciences will be evaluated and selected by the CBS Admissions Committee after they have made a formal application through the NCSU Graduate School Admissions Office and submitted other supporting documents as requested by the Graduate School and the CBS Graduate Program.

Requirements for admission to the Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program include a bachelor's or master's degree from a recognized college or university, a grade point average of B (3.0) or better, three letters of recommendation, and the GRE General Test (the GRE Subject Test is optional). Additional materials include official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work and a statement of purpose describing background, research experiences and interests, and career goals. Prior laboratory research experience, while not required, is strongly recommended.

FINANCIAL AID

Students accepted into a graduate program at NC State are eligible for financial support from a number of sources. College stipends are awarded on a competitive basis for the first year of study and in subsequent years, research assistantships are provided from the research advisor's grants. More information about financial support can be found at http://www.fis.ncsu.edu/grad_financialService/ . Candidates for the Master's degree generally do not receive financial aid.
