CVM BSL3 Facility is offering a two-part course designed to provide information in BSL3 utilization from two approaches. Part I is to be presented in a lecture and demonstration format covering topics such as laboratory management, selection of proper laboratory Personal Protective Equipment, and dealing with laboratory emergencies. Part I is offered to all those seeking a better understanding of why BSL3 laboratories exist and how they differ from standard research and clinical laboratories in design and management, including administrators, biosafety officers and laboratory supervisors as well as researchers wishing to work within BSL3 laboratories. Those completing this course will be able to apply these concepts in the workshop phase of the course, “Biosafety Practices in the BSL3 Laboratory.” Part II is not intended to replace laboratory mentoring but to give a standardized level of training which can then be made site-specific by supervisors of the facility in which they choose to work. This program is unique because it is conducted within a BSL3 facility. Attendees gain knowledge of a variety of applications of BSL3 Science and Safety and will leave the experience with a sense of challenge and excitement for learning more about BSL3 Science and Safety.

The objective of this two-part series is to introduce participants to BSL3 facilities and practices. Attendees of the concepts and workshop segments should be able to understand and discuss the major aspects of Biological Safety Level 3 facilities and practices and why they are important. For those attendees that have no prior work experience in a BSL3, the Part I Concepts class followed by Part II Practice in Procedures will provide a foundation upon which, when returning to other BSL3 laboratories, site-specific training can be accomplished in a more efficient and effective manner. For attendees with prior BSL3 experience, this course will enhance and standardize the understanding and foundational knowledge of the facilities in which they have worked and the practices they perform. This course in no way replaces the need for site-specific training and supervisory verification of understanding and safe work practices in any laboratory.

Registration

Registration for Concepts in BSL3 Containment is $299 paid before xxx, and $349 paid after xxx. Registration includes lectures, lunch, and proceedings on CD. Printed proceedings will be available for an extra charge of $20. THIS COURSE IS LIMITED TO 20 PEOPLE, allowing an instructor to student ratio of at least 1:10.
