Craniotomies and Brain Surgery in Dogs

Program Overview
This short course is intended to teach participants the standard approaches to the brain and principles of brain surgery. The standard craniotomies and treatment of hydrocephalus and Chiari malformations will be presented in lectures, and the techniques practiced in cadaver laboratories with two people per cadaver. There will be eight demonstrators circulating the room to help and and advise participants.
Following completion of this day-long course, the participant will
- Be familiar with transfrontal, supratentorial and infratentorial approaches to the brain
- Know how to place a ventriculopertitoneal shunt to treat hydrocephalus
- Understand how to manipulate brain tissue

You will be provided with one cadaver per two participants for the day. A basic surgical kit and surgairtomes will be provided for each cadaver. Vendors will be present and demonstrating other neurosurgery equipment. The instruments included in the basic kit are listed below. If you would like anything else, you will need to bring it with you. Basic Surgical Kit
One pair of Mayo scissors
One pair of Metzenbaum scissors
Two pairs of tissue forceps
Two pairs of hemostats
One freer elevator
Two pediatric gelpi retractors
Two Allis tissue forceps
Two scalpel handles
Class size is limited to 24 people a day for a total of 48 slots. Please let us know if you prefer to come on Saturday or Sunday, but course allocations to a certain day will be made on a first-come first-served basis.

Registration
Tuition for this course is $650, which includes all lectures, a proceedings manual, laboratory sessions, breakfast and lunch. A refund less a 25% administrative fee will be granted for notices received in writing, either by mail, fax, or e-mail, by August 8, 2008. No refunds will be granted after the course has begun.
