Veterinary medicine may be the most important profession in this state. Why? Because in North Carolina, animals - as companions, as food sources and as indicators of environmental processes - are more important than ever before to the economy of the state and to human well-being and happiness. It is the role of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine to meet the future needs created by the interdependence of humans and animals and to ensure the quality of animal health care and research that is so essential to human and animal welfare. Created in 1978 to attract funding for the College's teaching, research, discovery and extension in the field of veterinary medicine, the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation, Inc. operates exclusively for educational and scientific purposes, providing assistance that helps promote educational activities, maintain a prominent faculty, encourage diverse research and facilitate cooperative activities with other disciplines and institutions. All these activities are overseen by a volunteer board of directors representing professional, business and civic leaders from communities accross the state. Board members serve as advocates for the College and University.
