Research
Interests and Expertise
Ocular
immunology, inflammation, toxicology, pharmacology, sustained ocular drug delivery.
In
the Comparative
Ophthalmology Research Laboratory, we study the pathogenesis of ocular immunologic
and inflammatory disorders and have developed innovative
methods to treat these potentially blinding diseases.
We have been especially interested in the study of ocular toxicology and pharmacology of several medications. We are particularly interested in the two main causes of blindness in horses in the southern United States, equine
recurrent uveitis and fungal keratitis. We are also interested in studying these naturally-occurring diseases, since they are models of common human diseases. Recently, we have explored methods to deliver
therapeutic levels of medications to the eye for extended
periods of time using micro-implant technology.
