Overview

The mission of the Department of Clinical Sciences is to:

Prepare veterinarians and veterinary specialists to use their knowledge and skills to improve patient care, add value to their business or institution, strengthen their communities, and preserve the environment.

Make and publicize new discoveries to prevent, diagnose, and treat disease in companion animals, horses, laboratory animals, aquatic species, and wildlife.

Provide cutting-edge diagnostic, medical, and surgical procedures, compassionate patient care, and quality service to our referring veterinarians and clients.

Earn the respect and support of our stakeholders, especially clients of our hospital, veterinary practitioners, animal-loving individuals, related businesses and industries, NC State University, and the North Carolina legislature.

Programs and projects to support this mission are described in Departmental Initiatives.

The Department of Clinical Sciences has 65 faculty members, 51 residents, intern, and post-doctoral fellows, 22 graduate students, and 30 research technicians and 6 administrative staff. The department provides learning opportunities within the four-year veterinary curriculum (educational information) and through continuing education for practitioners. Within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, faculty and staff provide care for patients, teach veterinary students, and provide advanced training for interns and residents.

Faculty are very active in research programs to improve the health and welfare of animals and people. The Comparative Biomedical Sciences graduate program allows graduate students to focus their research in the areas of cell biology, infectious diseases, pharmacology, pathology, and population medicine. Other graduate programs with which departmental faculty are affiliated include programs in immunology, physiology, and functional genomics.
