If a student is scheduled for an externship experience but fails to formally approve the experience by submitting the required Registration Form within the stated deadlines, the student will be dropped from the block and required to schedule another rotation in its place.

If a student completes an externship experience but fails to submit the required paperwork within the stated deadlines, an unsatisfactory grade will be recorded.

Course Description

The course is a required (food animal focus area) or recommended (equine focus area, mixed animal focus area) rotation for senior veterinary students to participate in a large animal private practice or experience to: a) enhance and learn clinical, technical and manipulative skills; b) develop more effective client communication skills and time management; and c) observe elements of small business management, including personnel deployment and professional financial interactions with private clients or those engaged in agribusiness.

Students have the opportunity to choose a particular private veterinary practice, a specific course at another veterinary college or institute, or corporate practice to work under the direct supervision of a licensed veterinarian engaged in food animal/rural, equine or mixed practice. There is an extensive Participating Practices List (Internal Use Only). Students can suggest and provide reasons for identifying another practice or experience not included in the database.
