Merck-Merial NIH Veterinary Scholars Symposium
North Carolina State University – College of Veterinary Medicine is proud to host the 2009 Merck-Merial NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium from August 6 - 8, 2009.
The Merck-Merial-NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium brings together outstanding scientists and veterinary scholars participating in mentored research programs in colleges of veterinary medicine and veterinary schools across the United States and Canada. Participating trainees who will present their research include veterinary students in summer research internship programs, combined DVM(VMD)/PhD programs, and post-doctoral veterinarians in research training programs. Scientists from academic and government institutions as well as private enterprises are invited to speak and network with the participating trainees.

Posters:
Posters must be sized so that they will fit on a 4'(vertical)X6'(horizontal) cork board. Abstracts must be included on posters as they will only be provided to attendees on CD. The poster must have the students support acknowledged.

Registration Information:
Students and faculty are required to register for the symposium. You need to complete the form regardless of funding. The registration fee will be waived if you are a Merck-Merial Student or NIH T35 sponsored student but, you still need to register. As a reminder do not e-mail credit card information. After you register you will receive a confirmation e-mail. This e-mail will give you additional details regarding the symposium. If you do not receive a confirmation within three days please check your spam file or contact us at 919-513-6366 with questions about your registration status.
Travel Arrangements:
Plan on arriving on Thursday, August 6 by 5:00PM in order to receive registration materials and attend the welcome reception beginning at 6:00PM.
If you are arriving by plane:
Merck-Merial sponsored students are required to make arrangements through Travel Experts. They can do so individually, or the program director at their respective institution can do so for them. Any other faculty or student attendees not sponsored by Merck-Merial may make arrangements through Travel Experts or any agent of their choosing. For those making arrangements outside of Travel Experts, please provide an itinerary to cvm-ce-owner@lists.ncsu.edu
- To make your plane reservations through Travel Experts you will need to fill out a reservation form. For the form click here.
- Travel Experts will confirm reservations and provide itinerary via email.
- Student participants sponsored by the Merck Merial Summer Scholars program will not be required to pay for airfare. All other summer students (T35 sponsored and others) and combined degree students will be required to pay for travel expenses.
- Be advised that travel will be scheduled utilizing symposium budgetary guidelines/limitations; which may necessitate multiple connections.
- Transportation from the airport to the hotel will be provided by the Marriott for all participants. A shuttle will be available outside the baggage claim area. Any attendee not locating a shuttle within 15 minutes can contact the hotel using the phone located at the kiosk by baggage claim.

If you are arriving by car and will be requesting reimbursement for travel expenses, please contact Samantha Hartford by July 6. 919-513-6421 samantha_hartford@ncsu.edu. This must be arranged prior to any travel.
Hotel Reservations:
The headquarter hotel for the Merck-Merial NIH National Veterinary Scholars Symposium is the Raleigh Marriott Crabtree Valley.
- Merck-Merial, NIH T35, DVM/PhD and other participating students will automatically have space reserved when their registration for the Symposium is received.
- Merck Merial Sponsored students will not be responsible for room and tax charges, which will be billed to the master account. However, a credit card will still be required at check in for any incidental room charges
- All other students will be required to pay for their rooms. These participants will be given room assignments after the June 26 registration deadline. A credit card number may be then be forwarded to the Marriott or a credit card must be provided at check in
- Roommates will be assigned for all students. Merck-Merial students must be roomed together.
- All other attendees are required to make their own reservation. Reservations must be made by Monday July 6, 2009. When making reservations refer to National Veterinary Scholars symposium REFERENCE #: 1-T97B0N. Room rate is $122.90 per double occupancy room, including tax

Research at NC State:
Located on 180 acres near downtown Raleigh, the College encompasses 20 buildings on the main Centennial Biomedical Campus. Instruction is in three departments—Clinical Sciences, Molecular Biomedical Sciences, and Population Health & Pathobiology. In addition to the four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, there are programs leading to master and doctoral degrees in several areas with numerous opportunities for specialization.
Research programs at the College of Veterinary Medicine comprise over 100 faculty representing more than 25 disciplines working with more than 20 species. Researchers address critical issues in biomedical, agricultural and biological sciences through a broad variety of experimental approaches and techniques - ranging from basic discovery in molecular biology to application of new technology in the veterinary teaching hospital or in herds and flocks of the state's livestock industry. The overall goal of the College's research program is to provide solutions to problems of particular importance to North Carolina and to address problems of importance to society at large.
