Welcome to the Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers Research Home Page at North Carolina State University.

A syndrome of protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) and/or protein-losing nephropathy (PLN) occurs in related soft-coated wheaten terriers (SCWT). The objectives of our research program are:

  • To determine the early manifestations of this syndrome so that affected dogs can be recognized earlier.

  • To determine the mode of inheritance of this syndrome so that effective breeding programs can be designed that will eliminate this syndrome.

  • To investigate the pathogenesis of this disease.

  • To design effective treatment protocols for affected dogs.
This site provides more information about our research program as well as information about the syndrome, recommended screening for all SCWT (including pertinent sample submission) and recommended treatment.
