Advancing Animal Health through Education, Innovation, and Specialized Care
The NC State Veterinary Health Complex (VHC), established in 1983, is one of the highest rated regional academic medical centers in the country, serving communities throughout North Carolina as well as many other states. The mission of the Veterinary Health Complex is three-fold:
- Compassionate, state of the art specialty health care
- Expert clinical instruction for 4th year veterinary students from the College of Veterinary Medicine
- Ongoing investigation of innovative techniques and procedures to further advance the field of veterinary medicine
With over seventeen clinical services staffed by board certified specialists, many of whom are not only nationally but also internationally renowned, the VHC is on the cutting edge of veterinary medicine. Patients benefit from the combined expertise of multiple specialists utilizing a team approach to patient health care. Each year, nearly 22,000 patients are treated in the VHC.
The foundation for the VHC resides both in its partnership with referring veterinarians along with its strong commitment to the best possible care for both patients and clients. Cases that represent diagnostic and therapeutic challenges are sent to the VHC by referring veterinarians providing an opportunity for advancement of the veterinary profession through discovery, innovation and sharing of knowledge. Tomorrow’s veterinarians and veterinary specialists are able to gain invaluable educational experience through the delivery of medical care and interactions with referring veterinarians.
The VHC is divided into the Small Animal Hospital and the Large Animal Hospital.
Small Animal services specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical issues for companion animals, primarily dogs and cats as well as exotic animals. Additionally, the Small Animal Emergency Service provides urgent/emergency care services after normal hospital business hours.

Large Animal services specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical and surgical disorders in horses, as well as sheep, goats, cattle and llamas through field services. Emergency care is also provided after normal hospital business hours.
