Future Equine Veterinarians of North Carolina
How veterinarians come full circle.
GOALS:
- To target young potential equine oriented veterinarians in high school and college
- To increase quality of equine oriented students graduating from NCSU/CVM
- To reduce career stress and attrition in first 5 years post-graduation
- To develop nationally and internationally known quality equine clinicians
Step #1 : NC Veterinarians
- Notice potential high school/college students
- Mentor
- Notify NCSU/CVM faculty
- Co-recruitment
Step #2 : NCSU/CALS and potentially other (NC) Colleges
- Mentor to be an efficient student and obtain a solid husbandry knowledge before students get to CVM
Step #3 : NCSU/CVM/EHP
- Develop Mentor program from first day in Veterinary College
- 1 faculty / 1 practitioner
- Monitor required skills
- Expand white coat day
- Use Current teaching programs
- House Officer involvement
- Scholarship funding program
Sept #4 : Externships
- Need to sequence and individualize externships experiences with veterinary practices
- Work with local, regional, national and international opportunities
Step #5 : New graduates, first 5 years
- Continue mentoring via C.E., email, etc.
- Involve AAEP
Step #6 : NC Veterinarians
- Become mentors
- Develop Continuing Education programs
- Involve table discussions about recruitment and mentoring at meetings (NCVC, NCVMA, Etc.)
- AAEP Involvement
