At the Behavioral Medicine Service of North Carolina State University Veterinary Health Complex, we specialize in the treatment of behavior disorders in companion animals. These include anxiety disorders, elimination problems, compulsive behaviors, and numerous other problems in dogs and cats. We also help clients with behavioral concerns and prevention, such as preparing your pet for a new baby, socializing your new puppy, and adding a new pet to your household.

Before seeing you and your pet at the Behavioral Medicine Service, we review your pet’s medical record, evaluate the written behavioral history, and view any additional materials (such as videos) you submit. At the consultation appointment, about 2 hours in length, we observe your pet and talk with you to evaluate the behavioral problem(s) and develop a management program. This program consists of specific written discharge instructions regarding environmental management and positive behavior modification techniques which we demonstrate. These are customized to your household and your lifestyle. Behavioral medication may also be recommended. We will send a copy of the discharge instructions to your primary veterinarian as well. Telephone and e-mail communications are included in the initial appointment. Depending on the situation, you and your pet may benefit from one or more follow-up appointments.
