Emergencies

Small Animal

During the VTH regular business hours (Monday - Friday, 8AM to 5PM), all emergencies must be referred to the VTH by the patient's primary care veterinarian unless your animal is currently under treatment at the VTH or the emergency involves a problem previously treated at the VTH.

After regular business hours, you may contact our Small Animal Emergency Service (SAES) directly by calling 919.513.6911. The SAES will see your animal immediately with or without a referral from your primary care veterinarian.

Large Animal

The VTH will see emergencies for large animals including horses, cattle (dairy and beef), goats, pigs, llamas, etc. with or without a referral from a referring veterinarian 24 hours a day. The emergency clinicians while under the direct supervision of senior faculty work closely with the primary care veterinarian through out the process. This service can be reached by calling 919.513.6630.

Payment Information

Even though the VTH is partially supported by the state of North Carolina, the Hospital is responsible for paying operating costs through fees charged for services. Total costs are generally comparable to other specialty practices, although complex problems requiring more extensive workups may exceed these costs.

If your animal must be hospitalized, an estimate of the anticipated cost of treatment will be provided to you. A deposit equal to the low end of the estimate is required at the time of admission to the hospital. Full payment is expected at the time of discharge.

We accept payment by cash, check, credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover Card), or
Care Credit.
