Clinical Pathology Laboratory

The Clinical Pathology Laboratory (CPL) is housed in an 1176-square foot facility. The CPL is staffed by 7 full-time medical technologists, and 6 part-time emergency/after-hours laboratory technicians. The CPL is operational 24 hours/day, 365 days per year and is comprised of 7 smaller laboratory entities: Parasitology, Coagulation, Immunohematology, Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, and Cytology.

The CPL has three major functions. It is primarily a teaching/service laboratory, aiding in the teaching of Clinical Pathology to veterinary students, and providing laboratory results for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in patients admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). This laboratory provides clinical laboratory testing (Urinalysis, Cytology, Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Parasitology, Coagulation) for client cases in the VTH, and research cases in the College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). It also functions as a service laboratory to the CVM researchers. Thirdly, it is a reference laboratory for selected tests sent to us by referring veterinarians. The dynamics of the lab are evident. Since the lab began in 1984, its services have expanded to include a large variety of tests; approximately 550 orderable tests and 80 test profiles. The laboratory also serves as a central receiving area for all "send-out" tests, i.e. necessary tests unavailable at the CVM-VTH that must be mailed or delivered to reference labs within or outside the CVM.

The CPL processes billing copies, records and reports the results to faculty, house officers, and students. In addition, the lab makes appropriate medical record copies available and keeps a complete file for all send-out tests and for all tests performed within the laboratory. An average of 14,000 tests/month are performed in this laboratory.
