Clinical Services

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) is organized into individual specialty referral services, each with knowledgeable referral coordinators to answer your questions and schedule appointments. The Hospital includes board-certified specialists in the fields listed below, as well as Support Services such as anesthesiology, intensive care, radiology, pathology and diagnostic laboratory medicine.

Small Animal Clinic

Behavior Service: Specializes in the treatment of behavior disorders in companion animals. These include anxiety disorders, elimination problems, compulsive behaviors, aggression and other behavioral issues in dogs and cats.

Blood Bank: Specializes in the collection and distribution of vital blood products to our hospitalized patients. Dogs who are 1-5 years old and weigh at least 50 pounds are recruited to participate in the blood donor program.

Canine Bone Marrow Transplant: Provides treatment for dogs suffering from lymphoma through the use of leukaphoresis machines that painlessly harvest healthy stem cells from cancer patients. The NC State VTH is the first in the nation to offer bone marrow transplants.

Cardiology: Specializes in the diagnosis and medical/surgical management of acquired and congenital heart disease in dogs and cats.

Dentistry: Specializes in enhancing the oral health for pets of all ages. Treating peridontal and endodontic diseases, orthodontic conditions and traumatic injuries.

Dermatology: Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of all companion animals and equines with skin diseases, management of chronic ear diseases, and immunological dermatoses such as autoimmune skin diseases, food reactions and atopic dermatitis.

Integrated Pain Management: Specializes in companion animal pain management incorporating expertise from all of the specialty services to provide individualized treatment plans.

Internal Medicine: Specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of complex medical disorders. Includes a 24 hour, fully staffed ICU (Intensive Care Unit).

Oncology: As part of the North Carolina Animal Cancer Treatment Program, this service provides comprehensive treatment to companion animals with cancer. Treatment options include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hyperthermia, and canine bone marrow transplants.

Ophthalmology: Specializes in a full range of diagnostic, surgical, and therapeutic treatment of eye disorders for both companion animals and equines. Provides state-of-the-art cataract removals and an Equine Ophthalmology Service.

Orthopedics: Specializes in the diagnosis and surgical management of fractures and other injuries, lameness, developmental joint disease, hip dysplasia, and limb deformities.

General Surgery: Specializes in oncologic, thoracic, abdominal, head and neck and reconstructive surgery. Board-certified clinicians have expertise in feline renal transplants, microsurgery, laser surgery, and minimally invasive surgical techniques. Pain management is a key focus of our surgical care. Companion Avian and Reptile Medicine: Provides medical and surgical care of birds, reptiles and amphibians. A multi-discipline approach includes consultations with small animal specialists including surgeons, radiologists, ophthalmologists, etc.

Large Animal Clinic

Ruminant Animal Clinic

Ruminant Health Management: Provides diagnosis and treatment of medical, surgical, and production disorders of sheep, goats, cattle, and llamas by way of in-field and in-hospital services. Field service is provided to farm animal clients within a 45 mile radius; consultations are made statewide.
